Its products feature an extremely characteristic design and all belong to the high-end class. What draws attention is not only its fantastic construction, but also a beautiful logotype depicting a griffin—a mythical creature with a lion's body and an eagle's head and wings.

It is and the cover of High Fidelity features a Compact Disc player. And yet it is a digital format that has its years, technically outdated and considered by many music lovers as a dead end, and even the end of real music. However, we do this deliberately, not agreeing to zero-one treatment of audio formats, at least the most successful ones.

Because, let's be honest, each of the audiophiles has their one, only, "real" format, which they consider as the closest approximation to the source—usually the analog "master" tape.

And I won't change it because you can't change it. Unambiguous and exclusionary approach to this topic resembles religion, and religion is not negotiable. However, because I have my own opinion, I have to add something: I think that a well-prepared CD can sound insanely good. I am not alone in this believe. In the Gryphon monograph, Albert L.

Jones wrote:. The decision to introduce the first Gryphon digital source to the lineup was not easy.

This choice was also not dictated by the desire to increase sales through expanding brand's portfolio. What happened was simply a result of growing frustration due to the large differences in sound quality experienced by designers and experienced members of Gryphon's listening panels, when they compared the original, analogue, coming from the Gryphon archive, copies of "master" tapes with a typical CD.

It turned out that the problem was not in the format itself, but in how it was used. And it is no accident that Flemming E. Rasmussen has remained faithful to it to this day, despite the fact that the company's story began with a unique phono preamplifier step-upand the basic reference source in the evaluation of any design are the analog master tapes referred.

For the first time, its device has a completely different shape than a regular box. Although all products designed by Flaming stand out with their excellent "architecture" and precise lines, the Ethos stands out even against them. It has a triangle-like shape. Its main body is an equilateral triangle, but the display with touch buttons goes slightly forward, hence the specification shows that its dimensions are x x mm width x height x depth.

We don't see many triangle-shaped devices in audio, which is sort of surprise. In the case of a turntable manufacturer, this shape is much more anchored in the technique and it is about three-point support of the turntable base.

And this type of support is—as we know since the times of Leonardo da Vinci—the best possible one. So I think that this is exactly what Ethos designers wanted—to ensure its proper mechanical integrity, unachievable to an equally high degree in a rectangular chassis supported at three points. And it is hard to understand why such solutions are so rare in audio. Apart from a few cases of small companies, the only predecessor of Gryphon could be a German company, whose name, unfortunately, I forgot, which a dozen or so years ago offered amplifiers in such housings.

Let's get back to technologies. The Ethos is a Compact Disc player with digital inputs. It is a top-loader design, i. In top-loaders, the disc is placed directly on the motor axis or the main bearing axis, as in C. The whole usually closes with a flap, except for the Ancient AudioAcousticPlan and 47 Labs players.

The flap can be slid to the side or moved up and down—both the older Mikado and the new Ethos feature the latter option.

The Ayon Audio's players are exceptions to this rule as with them one moves the "flap" on and off manually. It was designed by the same engineers who—working for Philips at the time—designed the CD-Pro2. You can recognized it at first glance.

When testing the Pro-Ject transport I also checked how it handles defective discs.A continuity test is a simple way of checking whether a circuit is open or closed, and it can help you identify a bad switch or outlet, as well as assist you in identifying wires in electrical boxes. Unlike a voltage or current test, a continuity test is done with the power off -- the tester supplies the current you need to conduct the test.

You can test continuity with a multimeter or a dedicated continuity tester, which is a simple device with two leads, a battery and a light. When checking for continuity, you determine whether or not electricity can pass between two given points in an electric conductor. A continuity tester has two leads connected to a small battery, and when you touch the leads together to complete the circuit, the meter should register 0 resistance or -- if you have a dedicated continuity tester -- the light should come on.

If you're using a digital multimeter, the device may also beep. Testing for continuity is an easy and reliable way to determine whether a switch or outlet has internal damage.

If you're using a multimeter, set it to the "Continuity" function, or select a midrange resistance setting, in ohms. The power needs to be off when testing continuity. Verify that no electricity is flowing by using a noncontact circuit tester.

Check the tester by putting the leads together and ensuring that the device lights up, beeps or registers 0 ohms of resistance.

Place the other lead on any other terminal except the green ground terminal. If the tester lights up, beeps or shows 0 resistance, it means that electricity can flow freely between those terminals, and in most cases, that means that the device is good.

If the device is a switch, the tester should go off and on when you flip the switch. You can use this technique to check appliance switches, thermostats and fuses.

Be sure the power is off, then touch the leads to the terminals of the device in question. When you're doing electrical wiring, it's easy to lose track of the wires, and a continuity tester can help determine which wire goes to the switch or outlet in a nearby box.

Connect a test wire to the wire you need to identify by twisting the ends together. Use a wire long enough to reach the other electrical box. Probe the other wires in the box with the other lead.

When you find the right wire, the circuit will close and the tester will light up or beep. To determine continuity, set your multimeter to measure ohms of resistance. A simple continuity tester. Step 2: Check the Tester Check the tester by putting the leads together and ensuring that the device lights up, beeps or registers 0 ohms of resistance. Step 3: Touch Lead to Terminal Touch one lead on one of the hot terminals of the device, identified by a brass screw.

Step 4: Touch Other Lead to Terminal Place the other lead on any other terminal except the green ground terminal. Step 1 Connect a test wire to the wire you need to identify by twisting the ends together. Step 2 Clamp one of the leads of the tester to test wire.

Step 3 Probe the other wires in the box with the other lead. Share this article. This site uses cookies to deliver our services and provide a basic level of website functionality. Small batteries, such as AA batteries, are measured in mAh, while deep-cycle lead-acid batteries, fitted in items such as golf carts and wheelchairs, are measured in Ah.

User Manuals

Both refer to the time a battery can last, when it's fully charged, but as the battery discharges, so the mAh or Ah decreases. A good method to determine the charge retained in your battery is to check the amperage output using a multimeter. Look for the label on the side or top of your battery to find out the Ah your battery delivers, when it's fully charged and in good condition.

For example, a deep cycle battery may have 12V 50Ah on the label, meaning it produces 12 volts and 50 amp hours. Turn on the multimeter. Check that the jacks on the ends of the two wires to the meter are inserted in the Ah jack sockets on the meter, if your meter has several sockets, or set it to measure Ah by turning the dial to the appropriate setting or by pressing the Ah button.

Refine the Ah setting to a range that fits the Ah on the battery's label. For example, if the label says 50Ah, then set the range between 0 and 60Ah. Connect the metal alligator clip on the end of the black wire from the meter onto the negative terminal of the battery; it's likely to be labelled "-" or "Neg. Look at the reading on the meter display. The reading matches the battery label, if it's fully charged.

You can work out the percentage charge in your battery by using a calculator to divide the meter reading by the figure on the battery's label and then multiplying the result by For example, if the meter reading is 20, then 20 divided by 50 equals 0. Use a calculator to work out how long your battery will power your electrical device by checking the amperes on the label on the electric motor or device that the battery powers. For example, if the device consumes 5Ah and the reading on the meter is 20Ah, divide 5 into 20 to get 4, meaning your battery will power your device for 4 hours.
